Kitchen Volunteering

 

Kitchen volunteers are at the heart of Foodhall.

Role description: As a Kitchen Volunteer at Foodhall, you will be part of a team responsible for creating nutritious, tasty meals for our community using surplus ingredients and supporting the overall running of the kitchen. You will always work alongside at least one other volunteer in the kitchen, and most of the time in a team of around 4-6 people.

Responsibilities:

  • Working as part of a team to produce tasty nutritious meals for our community cafe, to be frozen and delivered, or for events

  • Working as part of a team to reduce food waste by using surplus ingredients and maintaining excellent stock rotation in the Foodhall kitchen

  • Maintaining standards of cleanliness and hygiene

  • Working in a safe manner that promotes the health and safety of yourself and those around you

  • Creating and maintaining a welcoming environment for people from all walks of life in the kitchen

Tasks:

  • Cooking tasty and nutritious meals for serving at the cafe 

  • Batch cooking, portioning and storing meals for distribution

  • Cooking food for one off events at Foodhall and elsewhere

  • Sorting and prioritising ingredients to use in order to minimise waste

  • Receiving, sorting and storing deliveries of donated ingredients in order to minimize waste

  • Cleaning kitchen surfaces and contact points regularly

  • Deep cleaning the kitchen (this takes place during the XX kitchen shift)

Desired skills + qualities:

  • Solid confidence in kitchen 

  • Good kitchen hygiene experience (not necessarily certification!) or willingness to learn

  • Creative approach to food and teamwork

  • Open minded and can engage with people who have very different life experiences to yourself
